Jacob Fowler Is the Only Montreal Name on the Calder Board
Jacob Fowler is a Calder candidate at +2000 in a rookie field led by Porter Martone and Gavin McKenna for the fourth-ranked team in the East.
Montreal is ranked fourth on ESPN’s early board and has exactly one player quoted in the Calder Trophy market. That is not a criticism of the roster. It is a description of what kind of roster it is.
Jacob Fowler sits at +2000 on the rookie board, tied with Buffalo’s Konsta Helenius and behind seven other names.
The field ahead of him
The market opened with Philadelphia’s Porter Martone at +275 and Toronto’s Gavin McKenna at +310. Washington’s Cole Hutson follows at +675, San Jose’s Ivar Stenberg at +700, Chicago’s Anton Frondell at +875, Washington’s Ilya Protas at +1200 and Roman Kantserov at +1500. Fowler and Helenius share +2000, with Boston’s James Hagens at +2500 rounding out the top ten.
Martone is favoured over the first overall pick for a reason that has nothing to do with talent evaluation: he already has 10 points in nine NHL regular-season games, which removes the two questions that sink most Calder favourites. Books know he can handle the pace and that a coaching staff will play him. McKenna, from Whitehorse and one season removed from 51 points in 35 games at Penn State, has neither of those boxes ticked yet, although Toronto has signalled it will give him first-line power-play time at 18.
Why Montreal’s rookie ledger is short
A team that just reached the Eastern Conference Final with a 20-year-old leading its rookie class does not have many openings. Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky and Lane Hutson are all signed and all under $9 million per season. Ivan Demidov, second in last season’s Calder voting, is signed through 2034-35. Montreal’s restricted free agent list (Joseph Veleno, Kirby Dach, Zack Bolduc and Arber Xhekaj) is a list of players already in the league.
The gap between fourth in the rankings and one name at +2000 is precisely that: Montreal’s young players have mostly already graduated. That is a healthier position than it sounds, but it does leave the Calder market with very little Canadiens exposure to sell.
What a +2000 rookie price is worth
Longshot Calder tickets are among the least efficient bets on the board, because the trophy is decided as much by opportunity as by ability, and opportunity in August is a guess. A +2000 price implies something under five percent, and the two names in front of the field are priced at roughly four times that.
If you want Montreal rookie exposure this season, Fowler is the whole menu. Whether that is a bet or a novelty depends entirely on how much ice time opens up between now and Christmas, and nothing published this summer suggests much of it will.
