Anaheim's win total has two unresolved problems, not one

Anaheim’s roster on paper looks like a team on the rise. Anaheim’s cap sheet says something messier, and that gap is exactly what a win total should be pricing right now.

The Gauthier standoff by the numbers

Cutter Gauthier turned down a four-year offer worth $13 million a year and is reportedly looking closer to $15 million. Anaheim has roughly $9 million in cap space to work with, which is not enough to get a deal done at Gauthier’s number without moving money elsewhere first. That is not a negotiating tactic on the team’s side, it is a hard constraint.

Where the LTIR option comes in

One way out is moving Troy Terry to long-term injured reserve, which would free space without requiring a trade. The other is trading a veteran forward, with Chris Kreider, Alex Killorn and Frank Vatrano all mentioned as possibilities. Both paths solve the cap problem. Neither is neutral for the roster that opens the season. An LTIR move keeps the forward group intact but says something about Terry’s health status that the market has to take seriously. A trade solves the cap cleanly but subtracts a proven NHL scorer from the lineup that actually plays.

What it means for the win total

A team’s projected win total assumes a roster. Anaheim doesn’t have a settled one yet, and it is also separately managing Leo Carlsson’s offer-sheet situation on the same cap sheet during the same window. Books that have already posted a number on the Ducks are pricing an incomplete picture. The more useful approach is to wait on this one specifically, not because Anaheim is bad value, but because the roster the total is supposed to describe isn’t finished being built.
