The 2026-27 Stanley Cup Board Refuses to Believe in Carolina

2026-27 Stanley Cup odds analyze Carolina's position after their win, and explore why Florida and Colorado are also strong contenders.

The 2026-27 Stanley Cup Board Refuses to Believe in Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes ended a twenty-year wait in June, beating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to win their second Stanley Cup and their first since 2006. Two months later, the market has already talked itself out of them.

Look at the futures board VegasInsider posted on 19 August, which aggregates prices from bet365, BetMGM, DraftKings, Caesars, FanDuel and Hard Rock. Carolina sits at +650 to +800 depending on which of those six you check. The Florida Panthers are at +650. The Colorado Avalanche are the shortest number on the entire board at some shops, quoted between +600 and +750. Three teams, one narrow band, and the defending champion is not clearly on top of it.

Why the champion gets discounted

None of this is a slight on Carolina. It is what the Cup board almost always does to a winner. Repeating is the hardest thing in hockey, and oddsmakers price that reality rather than the parade. A championship team returns from a run that added two months of hockey to its legs, then faces a cap sheet that a title tends to make more expensive, not less. The market shortens the teams that spent the summer adding and lengthens the ones that spent it re-signing.

Florida is the cleanest example of the first category. The Panthers have been near the top of this board since the offseason opened, and the price reflects a roster that the market believes reloaded rather than rebuilt. Colorado’s case is simpler still: Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar remain two of the three or four most valuable players in the sport, and a team built around that pair rarely drifts far from the front of a futures list.

The chasing pack

Behind the top three, the drop is real but not dramatic. Vegas, who lost the Final and were shut out in the clincher after going more than eighteen minutes without a shot on goal in the second and third periods of Game 6, are back at +850 to +1100. Edmonton is priced in the same neighbourhood at +800 to +1200, with FanDuel the most bullish of the group at +1000 and both bet365 and DraftKings sitting at +1100. Tampa Bay follows at +1200 to +1400, Minnesota at +1300 to +1400, and Dallas at +1400 to +1700.

That cluster from roughly +650 through +1400 covers eight teams, and it is where the honest disagreement lives. Below it, the board thins fast. Washington shows the widest split of any contender-adjacent club, quoted anywhere from +1100 to +1800 across the six books, which is a genuine difference of opinion rather than a rounding error.

What the number is actually telling you

A futures price this early is a market’s best guess at a roster that has not played a shift together. Camp has not opened. The 84-game schedule that begins 29 September will reshape divisional races in ways nobody has modelled with confidence yet. Injuries have not happened.

The practical read is that value in August comes from disagreeing with a specific input rather than a whole team. If you think the market is underrating what Carolina’s defensive structure does over a long season, +800 is a different bet than +650, and the difference is entirely in which book you walk into. Prices on this board move on news, and the news that matters most is still two months away.
