Chicago's Win Total Is the Real Bet Behind the Bedard Extension

Blackhawks' win total for 2026-27 is crucial for bettors this fall, especially with Connor Bedard's recent five-year contract extension.

Chicago's Win Total Is the Real Bet Behind the Bedard Extension

Connor Bedard’s five-year, $75 million extension answers the question of whether Chicago keeps its franchise center. It does not answer whether the Blackhawks are actually good yet, and that is the number sportsbooks are pricing this fall.

Durability is the line, not talent

Bedard put up 75 points in 69 games last season, a genuine star-level pace when healthy. The problem is the “when healthy” clause: he has played fewer than 70 games in two of his three NHL seasons, and he opens 2026-27 already missing time to a shoulder injury. A win total built around a full, healthy Bedard season is a very different number than one that assumes another interrupted year, and the market has to price both outcomes at once.

The gap between those two versions of the season is worth putting in concrete terms. A team that gets 82 games of a point-a-game centre is a fundamentally different projection than one that gets 60, and on a roster this thin there is nobody behind him who narrows that difference. Chicago’s total is effectively a wager on games played by one player, dressed up as a wager on a team.

The defensive number nobody’s betting on yet

Chicago allowed 3.60 expected goals against per 60 with Bedard on the ice last season, which is the part of his game his own general manager has openly flagged as the next area to fix. A center who is a plus possession play-driver but a minus in his own end caps a team’s ceiling regardless of how many points he puts up, and Chicago’s supporting cast has not yet shown it can cover for that.

The uncomfortable follow-up is what happens while he is out. Somebody inherits the defensive-zone draws and the matchups against the other team’s best line, and on this roster that somebody is a worse option than a 20-year-old still learning the position. The absence is not only an offensive subtraction.

What 84 games does to the shape of this

The expanded schedule opens on September 29, earlier than the league has started in memory, with Chicago at Vegas on the opening tripleheader. Bedard’s missed time is concentrated at the front of that calendar rather than spread across it, which means the Blackhawks bank their worst hockey in the games that settle a season-long total early.

Two extra games also add roughly a win to any total in the mid-30s before a single other adjustment, and both are divisional. Chicago picks up two more dates against a Central field that is deeper than it is. If a book set this line off an 82-game anchor and bumped it, the higher number is doing the under a favour rather than a disservice.

The pick

Book Chicago’s win total under until the roster around Bedard demonstrably improves. The extension is a bet on the player’s future, not a signal that this specific season’s team is ready to contend. Those are two different wagers, and only one of them the Blackhawks actually made this summer.

The one thing that spoils it is timing. Books that have already shaded the number down for the shoulder are selling an under that has lost most of its edge, so this is a position worth checking the line on before taking it, not one to take at any price.
