The Heritage Classic Puts Montreal Outdoors in Winnipeg on October 25
Heritage Classic betting for 2026 features three outdoor games with varying conditions. The Jets and Canadiens matchup is crucial for bettors.
Outdoor games get treated as one category. They are not. The league is playing three of them this season and the only thing they share is a roof that is not there.
The Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic goes Sunday, Oct. 25 at Princess Auto Stadium, with Winnipeg hosting Montreal. The Winter Classic follows on Dec. 31 at Rice-Eccles Stadium, where Utah hosts Colorado. The Stadium Series lands Feb. 20 at AT&T Stadium, Dallas against Vegas.
Only one of the three is genuinely outdoors in a hockey sense
AT&T Stadium has a retractable roof. Rice-Eccles is at altitude in Salt Lake City on New Year’s Eve, which is cold but predictable. Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg in late October is the only one of the three where the weather is a live variable that neither club can plan around.
That matters for a total more than for a side. Outdoor conditions degrade ice quality, which slows the puck, shortens passes and pushes play toward the boards. The historical direction of that effect is downward on goals, and the practical effect on a bettor is that the hockey over/under is the market with an actual edge in it, not the moneyline.
The date is the second variable
Oct. 25 is roughly four weeks into an 84-game season that opens Sept. 29. Neither team will have settled into anything. Montreal will have played its opener in Toronto, hosted the Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes on Oct. 6, and worked through the front end of a divisional schedule that now runs 28 games. Winnipeg will have opened at home against Boston on Oct. 2.
Compare that to the Winter Classic on Dec. 31, by which point both Utah and Colorado will have 35 or more games of form to price off. An October outdoor game is a novelty result attached to an unformed sample, which is exactly the combination that produces a soft line and an unreliable one.
The gap between the two clubs is the actual angle
Montreal is quoted between +1700 and +2500 on the Cup board. Winnipeg is +10000 to +15000. That is not a small distance, and it holds even though Winnipeg still employs Connor Hellebuyck, who signed a seven-year, $59.5 million extension in October 2023 with five seasons remaining at an $8.5 million cap hit and a full no-movement clause.
Hellebuyck went 23-23-11 with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage last season, had knee surgery in November, and then backstopped Team USA to Olympic gold in Milan in February. A goaltender of that calibre in degraded outdoor conditions is precisely the profile that makes an under attractive and a favourite unreliable.
Where the value sits
If you bet one outdoor game this season, bet the Heritage Classic total, and bet it late, after the forecast, not before it. The Winter Classic and the Stadium Series will both be priced off real form by the time they arrive, which is another way of saying the market will already have done the work.
