Five Nations, One Long Island Weekend: The All-Star Game Bets on Countries
NHL All-Star Game 2027 will feature a 3-on-3 tournament with Canada, Finland, Sweden, the U.S., and a World team, building on successful formats.
The NHL has stopped pretending an exhibition between two arbitrary rosters is worth watching. The 2027 All-Star Weekend at UBS Arena on Long Island runs the skills competition on Feb. 5 and a tournament-format All-Star Game on Feb. 6, played 3-on-3 between five teams: Canada, Finland, Sweden, the United States and a World team.
The format is borrowed from the thing that worked
International hockey has been the league’s most reliable source of genuine intensity for two years running. The Olympics in Milan produced the moment that defines the current season’s context: Connor Hellebuyck backstopping the United States to gold in February after knee surgery the previous November, and Bill Guerin building the roster that got there before winning the Jim Gregory award as the league’s top general manager.
Nobody needed to be told to care. That is the hard part of an all-star event, and a national flag solves it more cheaply than any promotional idea the league has tried.
Five teams also fixes the structural problem with the previous version. Two rosters means one game and no stakes; five means a bracket, elimination, and a reason for the second period of anything to matter.
Why 3-on-3 and not full strength
Three-on-three is the format the league already knows works for exhibition hockey, because it makes the skill visible without asking anyone to hit. An all-star event cannot ask for physical play (the players are back with their clubs the following week), and 3-on-3 is the only structure that produces watchable hockey without it.
It also compresses each game enough that five teams fit into one evening.
The prediction nobody can price
There is no meaningful betting market on this and there should not be. Five-team 3-on-3 tournaments with no prior running and rosters assembled by nationality are close to random, and the sample is one night.
What is predictable is the composition problem. Canada, the United States, Sweden and Finland account for the overwhelming majority of the league; the World team collects everyone else. That means the World roster is the one with the widest talent range and the least cohesion, and also the one most likely to produce the weekend’s best individual performance, because it will be built from players who do not normally play together.
The calendar around it
February is a crowded month. The All-Star Weekend on Feb. 5 and 6 is followed by the Stadium Series at AT&T Stadium on Feb. 20, where Dallas meets Vegas. Both sit inside an 84-game season, the longest since 1993-94, that already runs 1,344 games across 194 days with a mid-season compression around the Milan dates.
For a bettor, the practical consequence is a scheduling one rather than a market one. Clubs with multiple all-star selections lose recovery time in a season with less of it to spare, and the games immediately after that weekend are where that shows up.
