Tkachuk is 26, put up 59 points in 60 games for the Senators, has two years left at an $8.2 million cap hit, and used his no-movement clause to steer the deal, his list included Vegas, Carolina and Minnesota. He now plays alongside his brother Matthew.

Jacob Markstrom came from New Jersey on June 30 for Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves, returning to the organisation that drafted him in the second round in 2008. He is 36 and played 44 games last season with a 3.07 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage. Akira Schmid arrived from Vegas on June 29 for a 2028 third as backup. Sergei Bobrovsky, who won two Cups in Florida, is now in Toronto on a three-year, $21 million deal, so the goaltending is not just changed, it is unproven in this building.

Neither reading is unreasonable. Which is exactly why the price moved 72 percent in three weeks without a game being played.

The champion is not the favourite

Worth noting alongside it: Carolina won the Cup in June, beating Vegas in six games with a 16-3 postseason record, and is quoted around +650 to +800. The Hurricanes are priced roughly where Florida’s short end sits, and The Hockey News ranked their off-season 16th.

Markets discount champions systematically, partly because a repeat is genuinely rare and partly because champions attract sentimental money that a book has to price against.
