The Goalie Carousel Repriced the Cup Board. Here's Where the Value Landed.

Goaltending is the highest-variance position in hockey and the one futures markets handle worst. A goalie who plays 55 games can drag a mediocre roster into a playoff spot or sink a contender by March, and preseason odds routinely lag the change by weeks. Four crease moves this summer are worth having on your card before the season opens September 29.

Florida Rebuilt Its Entire Tandem and Got Shorter Odds

The Panthers went into the offseason with both goaltenders, Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov, headed for unrestricted free agency. They lost both and replaced them from scratch.

Jacob Markstrom came from New Jersey on June 30 for Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves. He is 36, returning to the organisation that drafted him in the second round in 2008, and he is coming off a season with a 3.07 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage in 44 games. Those are not contender numbers. Akira Schmid arrived from Vegas on June 29 for a 2028 third-round pick as the backup.

Bobrovsky, meanwhile, won two Cups in that building in 2024 and 2025.

So Florida added Brady Tkachuk, which is why one book made them the outright Cup favourite at +640 in late July, and simultaneously replaced a two-time champion goaltender with a 36-year-old whose most recent season was below league average. The skater upgrade is real. The crease is a genuine risk that the shortest prices on the board are not accounting for.

If you are betting Florida, do it at the longer number available elsewhere rather than the favourite’s price.

Edmonton Solved the Problem It Has Had for a Decade

Frederik Andersen signed with the Oilers on a one-year deal worth $2.8 million. He had just gone 13-2 with a 1.89 goals-against average carrying Carolina most of the way to a championship.

There is an obvious caveat, which is that Andersen has a long injury history and a one-year deal at that price reflects the market’s view of his durability rather than his ability. But Edmonton has lost postseason series specifically because of goaltending, and this is the first summer in memory they addressed it with a proven playoff performer instead of hoping.

For a team priced at +1100, a cheap short-term fix to the exact flaw that has ended its last several seasons is the kind of detail that does not show up in a roster ranking.

Toronto Bought Age at the Wrong Moment

The Maple Leafs gave Bobrovsky three years and $21 million at 37, taking him to 40 when it expires after 2028-29. He was 27-23-1 with a 3.07 goals-against average, a .877 save percentage and four shutouts in 52 games last season.

A rebuilding team that just drafted first overall committing three years to a goaltender in decline is a decision that will be argued about all season. From a betting standpoint the relevant point is narrower: Toronto’s team totals and playoff-qualification markets should not be priced as though they added a difference-maker. They added stability and a name, and those are different things.

What This Means in Practice

Goaltending news is the most reliably underpriced information in hockey betting, because the market reacts to it at the moment of signing and then forgets. By November, a starter’s save percentage will have told you far more than any July analysis, including this one.

Watch the first ten starts from Markstrom and Andersen specifically. Those two performances are load-bearing for two of the four shortest Cup prices on the board, and neither is settled.
