Buffalo Over 96.5 Is the Total the 84-Game Change Helps Most

The Sabres won the Atlantic with 109 points and the market set their line at 96.5. Two extra divisional games make that gap wider, not narrower.

Buffalo Over 96.5 Is the Total the 84-Game Change Helps Most

Buffalo won the Atlantic Division with 109 points. VSiN’s Jonathan Davis posted the Sabres’ points total at 96.5, with the over priced at +100 on July 25.

That is a line set twelve and a half points below last season’s result, in a season that is two games longer. Both halves of that sentence deserve attention.

The regression case is real

Markets do not set a line that far under a division-winning total by accident. A 109-point season is, by construction, a season in which most things went right, and the base rate for repeating one is poor. Books price mean reversion aggressively on teams that overperformed, and 96.5 is roughly where you land if you assume Buffalo was a 95-point roster that ran hot.

There is also roster context. ESPN’s June panel ranked the Sabres fifth, which is the highest placement they have carried in years. Buffalo held talks with Winnipeg ahead of draft weekend about Connor Hellebuyck and did not produce a deal, and the Associated Press logged that failed pursuit under the club’s jury-out column. Devon Levi went to Edmonton for a 2028 third-round pick and a 2028 seventh.

So: a division winner that did not add the goaltender it wanted, priced as if last season was borrowed.

Why 84 games cuts against the under

Here is the part the line has to absorb. Every team plays 84 games this season, the first expanded schedule since 1993-94 (42 home, 42 road, 1,344 games across 194 days). That is roughly 2.4 percent more hockey, which on raw scaling turns 109 points into about 111.6.

But the scaling understates it, because the two additional games are divisional. Each club now plays two home and two road games against each of its seven division rivals, 28 divisional games out of 84. Divisional games run tighter, go past regulation more often, and produce more three-point outcomes than the average game on a schedule.

More three-point games raises everybody’s total, and it raises the totals of teams that win their division by a bit more than it raises the totals of teams that finish last in it.

Where the 96.5 has to come from

For Buffalo to land under 96.5 across 84 games, the Sabres need to play at roughly a 94-point pace over an 82-game equivalent. That is a 15-point drop from last season, on a roster that did not lose a foundational piece.

Fifteen points is not impossible. It is what a bad goaltending season looks like, or what happens when a team that outperformed its expected-goals numbers stops doing so. But it is a large ask, and the price is not paying for a large ask: the over sits at +100.

The read

Compare the other lines Davis posted the same day. Dallas over 100.5 at -130 off a 112-point season. Minnesota under 101.5 at -130 off a 104-point season with departures. Utah over 96.5 at +100 off 92 points. Washington over 99.5 at -115 off 95 points.

Buffalo is the only one of those where the line sits more than a full tier below last season’s result and the over is still available at even money. In a season built to inflate point totals, that is where the number looks softest.
