The Sharpest Power Ranking Is the Odds Board

2027 Stanley Cup odds saw Florida start at 11-1 and become the favorite by July. Insights on futures market and rankings from writers.

The Sharpest Power Ranking Is the Odds Board

A futures board is a power ranking with money behind it, which is why it moves faster than any panel poll. The 2027 Stanley Cup market has already rearranged its top five twice since Carolina lifted the trophy, and the direction of travel says something the June rankings did not.

Where it opened

On June 15, the day after ESPN’s panel voted, DraftKings had Carolina at +700 as the defending champion, Colorado at +800, and Vegas at +850 off their run to the final. Edmonton and Florida sat behind them at 11-1.

That board matched the consensus almost exactly. The champion on top, the runner-up close behind, and Florida priced as a good team with questions.

Where it went

By July 30, Canadian book BET99 had Florida alone at the top at +640, Carolina second at +700 and Colorado third at +750. Edmonton moved to +900 and Vegas drifted to +1000. Tampa Bay was next at +1200, then Minnesota at +1300, Washington at +1500 and Dallas at +1600.

Florida going from fifth-ish to outright favourite in six weeks is the single largest move on the board, and the reasons are on the transaction wire rather than in any model. Aleksander Barkov is back after missing the entire 2025-26 season. Brady Tkachuk arrived to play alongside his brother Matthew. Radko Gudas returned and Eetu Luostarinen was extended. Sergei Bobrovsky is gone, replaced in net by Jacob Markstrom at a lower cap hit through a trade.

The market treated that as the best roster in hockey. ESPN’s June panel had Florida ninth. theScore, ranking after the draft and free agency on July 4, had them second behind Carolina and flagged Markstrom’s reliability as the one live concern. Three respectable sources, three different answers about the same team, and only one of them is priced.

The prediction markets agree

Kalshi’s 2027 Stanley Cup market on July 8 had Florida ahead at 13 percent, Colorado at 12, Carolina at 10, and Edmonton, Tampa Bay and Vegas tied at 8. That is the same ordering the sportsbook board reached, arrived at by a different mechanism, which is about as close to independent confirmation as this exercise gets. Note that the raw percentages sum well above the field on a full board because they include the house margin equivalent, so treat them as relative weight rather than true probability.

The Kalshi read is more striking than the odds because Florida missed the playoffs in 2025-26 entirely. Traders are pricing a team on next year’s roster rather than last year’s result, which is exactly what a power ranking is supposed to do and frequently fails at.

The bottom of the board

The tail is where futures prices stop being useful as rankings and start being lottery tickets. BET99 had Seattle at +50000 and both Calgary and Vancouver at +100000. Those numbers are not fine-grained assessments of relative strength, they are the price at which a book is happy to take the ticket.

One mover worth noting further down: Yahoo Sports reported San Jose shortening from 50-1 to 35-1 on the back of their draft and the Macklin Celebrini signing. Movement that large in a longshot usually reflects a specific event rather than gradual reassessment.

Reading it as a bettor

Futures priced in August carry months of dead money and a wide margin, and the favourite at +640 offers no value cushion for a league that has produced a different champion in most recent seasons. The board is more useful as a ranking than as a bet. It tells you which rosters the market believes changed, and it updates the moment a Dylan Larkin trade or a Jason Robertson contract lands.
