Ranking the offseason's goaltending moves, from savviest to riskiest

Edmonton's Levi-Andersen swap, Vancouver's Demko uncertainty and Winnipeg's Hellebuyck security define an unusually eventful crease offseason.

Ranking the offseason's goaltending moves, from savviest to riskiest

Goaltending decided the last two Cup Finals, and this offseason’s crease moves reflect it. Some teams spent to lock in certainty. Others are hoping health cooperates. A few just got lucky with a trade.

1. Edmonton’s savings play

The Nurse-for-Mukhamadullin-and-Sharp-rights trade sent San Jose the Oilers’ full $9.25M commitment with no retention attached. Edmonton turned around and used the freed cap room on the goaltending market, adding Devon Levi and Frederik Andersen. After two straight Cup Final losses, upgrading the crease without gutting the roster elsewhere is the single smartest sequence of moves any team made this summer.

2. Winnipeg’s do-nothing certainty

Connor Hellebuyck trade speculation has stayed quiet, and there is a structural reason for that beyond lack of interest: he is signed through 2030-31 with a full no-movement clause. Doing nothing is itself a form of goaltending strength. The Jets do not need to replace him, extend him, or negotiate anything. That is a luxury most of the league does not have.

3. Vancouver’s open question

Thatcher Demko’s hip surgery leaves his camp readiness genuinely uncertain heading into an 84-game season compressed further by the Milan-Cortina Olympic break. Vancouver cannot plan its crease with confidence until Demko is cleared, and a shortened runway to get game-ready only raises the stakes if the recovery timeline slips.

4. Everyone else, waiting on health

The goaltending story this offseason is really an injury story. Demko’s hip is the headline case, but it sits alongside Seth Jarvis’s repaired shoulder in Carolina and Brad Marchand’s August surgery in Florida as reminders that even Cup-contending rosters are gambling on recovery windows before puck drop. Teams that came through August healthy in net have a real head start once the schedule compresses around the Olympic break.

The gap between Edmonton’s proactive crease upgrade and Vancouver’s wait-and-see hip recovery is as wide as any positional gap in the league right now. Goaltending health, not just goaltending talent, will separate contenders early in an 84-game season with less margin for slow starts.
