The Offseason Power Rankings Nobody Priced Until This Week

Most offseason power-ranking exercises get written in July and forgotten by training camp. This week alone produced three separate stories big enough to move real teams up or down the list before puck drop.

Movers up

Philadelphia’s offer sheet for Leo Carlsson, if it survives Anaheim’s seven-day matching window, instantly makes the Flyers a different team than the one anyone ranked in June. A No. 1 center added mid-summer is not a depth move, it is a tier change. Edmonton climbs on a smaller but real signal: two additional Global Series dates in Cologne next season is a scheduling quirk, not a roster upgrade, but it keeps the Oilers in the league’s marquee-event conversation at a moment when their Cup window is the story everyone is watching anyway.

Movers down, or at least paused

Chicago’s win-total case got more complicated the moment Connor Bedard’s extension locked in without matching progress on the roster around him. A star center on a long-term deal does not fix a defense that leaked 3.60 expected goals against per 60 with him on the ice. Until the Blackhawks address that, they stay ranked on potential rather than results, which is a different list than the one that matters in April.

The list update that matters most

None of this shows up in a traditional standings-based power ranking, because none of it is about last season. It is about which front offices spent the summer solving real problems and which spent it making bets on players solving those problems for them. Those are different strategies, and only one of them shows up favorably in a power ranking built in October rather than August.
